THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLERFROM THE PULITZER-WINNING, BOOKER-SHORTLISTED ELIZABETH STROUT COMES A STUNNING STANDALONE NOVEL OF LOVE, LONELINESS AND NEW BEGINNINGS' Strout is brilliant at uncovering what goes on beneath the surface of ordinary life’ THE TIMES'Emotionally stunning, devastatingly wise . . . her best novel yet' RACHEL JOYCE'‘Elizabeth Strout writes extraordinary fiction about ordinary people' TELEGRAPH‘A moving, tender and wise novel about a committed teacher who is utterly confounded by the emotional complexities of daily life. This might be Elizabeth Strout’s best yet’ CLARE CHAMBERS Artie Dam is a man with a secret. He spends his days teaching history to high schoolers, expanding their young minds, correcting their casual cruelties, and lending a kind word to those who need it most. He goes to holiday parties with his wife of three decades, makes small talk with neighbours, and, on weekends, takes his sailboat out on the beautiful Massachusetts Bay. He is, by all appearances, present and alive. But inside, Artie is plagued by feelings of isolation. He looks out at a world gone mad—at himself and the people around him—and turns a question over and over in his mind: how is it that we know so little about one another, even those closest to us?And then, one day, Artie learns that life has been keeping a secret from him, one that threatens to upend his entire world. Once he learns it, he is forced to chart a new course, to reconsider the relationships he holds most dear—and to make peace with the mysteries at the heart of our existence.

With exquisite prose and profound insight, Elizabeth Strout captures the way grief reverberates through decades, the comfort found in deep friendships and the freedom that comes when we break free of our secrets. The Things We Never Say is a stunning new novel from one of our most acclaimed observers of the human heart. ***PRAISE FOR ELIZABETH STROUT:'A terrific writer' ZADIE SMITH'A superbly gifted storyteller' HILARY MANTEL'Elizabeth Strout is one of my very favourite writers' ANN PATCHETT'She gets better with each book' MAGGIE O'FARRELL'A beautiful read' OPRAH WINFREY'Strout is, as ever, wonderfully attentive life's escapable cruelties and woes' SUNDAY TIMES

Making Friends
Format: Kindle
This whole series is absolutely fantastic. I love the idea of a magical sketchbook that Dany can draw anything in. My favorite part (and my sister’s), is when Prince Neptune acts like he’s about to leave, and he kisses Dany. Then, he tries to yank the sketchbook out of her hands and he yells “So I will reshape this world to fit my needs!” with the most evil look on his face. It’s super funny. All of the backstories were well-developed, and the Madison and Amanda storyline really impressed me! I think anyone with a good sense of humor would love this book.

Cute story about friendship with a fantastical twist.
Format: Kindle, Format: Kindle
Amazon has been recommending me this book for quite some time now, and since I read a lot of reviews saying that the premise was very interesting/ unusual, I decided to give it a shot. I bought the Kindle version. #1 The artwork: I'm a huge fan of graphic novels, so the art on the cover caught my eye immediately. I liked the overall style, and color palette. However I feel like the interior art falls flat sometimes. No doubt that the artist knows her stuff, but I felt like sometimes she might not have had such a strong handle on the characters. The line thickness tended to vary from panel to panel on some pages, and some characters didn't always look like they belonged in the same universe. #2: The story (spoilers): The concept for this was very interesting, and I enjoyed it for the most part, but there were some things about the story I thought were unnecessary. I don't think Prince Neptune needed to be a character at all. To me, his only real purpose was to make Danny into a less likable version of herself, and to end the book when he destroyed the school. The ending I also thought was a little weird. I had read reviews about it beforehand, but It still caught me completely off guard. I know the story is fantasy, obviously, but I think it could've been toned down just a smidge. I think if the plot focused more on the relationship between Danny, Madison, and even Danny's other friends, I would've given it five stars. I found myself asking a lot of questions about them in terms of who they were to Danny, and why it seemed like they all stopped hanging out for seemingly no reason. A point was made that Danny had a different schedule than them, but I didn't even see her make an effort to preserve her relationships despite this. One things I really want to praise the book on however, is the humor. There was a lot of subtle jokes for older readers that I chuckled at, that would probably fly over a kid's head. For those who are wondering, there's no swearing/ inappropriate words, but some bullying/ teasing/ crying is depicted. There is also fantasy "violence", but it's nothing worse than what you'd see in a Saturday morning cartoon on Disney channel. #3 Final Thoughts: Overall, I would recommend this book if you have young kids interested in this kind of thing. I'm not the target demographic for this, so I'm a bit more critical, however if someone had put this in the hands of 9 year old me, I would've absolutely loved it to bits.

Recommended by 11 year old boy
Format: Hardcover
My son selected this book to read with his school instructional support as a means to mimic a high cap program. My son likes to read books on this topic, which I find a little depressing and a little dark...but listening to the thought provoking conversations that tutor and student had over ZOOM....this is highly recommended. I did not read the book, but both tutor and student enjoyed reading it. They were a little sad to move to another book. The conversations that I overhead did a wonderful job of providing historical references (which I find lacking in his schooling so far), portraying how the characters FELT, what motivated them, and in general connecting my son to a world far bigger than greater than within our Covid quarantined city. Not sure how much of this wonderful learning experience was based on the talent and experience of the tutor, but ALLIES provided content that was educational, emotional and allowed the tutor to delve deeper, connect ideas, draw inferences and start predicting outcomes. She was trying to teach him to immerse himself in the reading....not just reading for a reading log. This was a very successful 'book club' for my son.
