Commissaris Ricardo Conti leidt het politieonderzoek en stuit onder meer op geruchten dat iemand de reputatie van de Baratti's wil schaden om hen zo te dwingen de villa te verkopen. Hij bijt zich vast in de zaak, die steeds complexer begint te worden. Net als zijn privéleven. Hij ligt in scheiding en moet de grootste moeite doen om werk en privé uit elkaar te houden. Dat lukt niet altijd, want de druk om de moordenaar te vinden wordt zo groot dat hij onbewust zijn zoontje Matteo in gevaar brengt. Als hij Matteo naar een pianoles van mevrouw Baratti stuurt om zo zelf de villa nader te kunnen onderzoeken, neemt hij het grootste risico van zijn leven.
