Born and died in Paris, France, Roll was a painter of portraits, landscapes, genre, and military scenes. He started as a designer of ornamentation, then entered the Beaux-Arts where he studied under such masters as Gerome, Bonnat, and Harpignies. He travelled to Holland, Germany, and Belgium, where he visited many museums. He first exhibited at the Salon of French Artists in 1870. He obtained a third class medal in 1875, and a first class in 1877. He was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1883. He won the Grand Prize at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900, and was made a Commander of the Legion of Honor at that time.
