During the 1800s discoveries by English naturalist Charles Darwin created quite an interest in jewelry fashioned after elements in the natural world. Women of the 1800s and early 1900s commonly adorned themselves with gem-set snakes, lizards, and bees.
This marvelous pendant features a gem encrusted insect in flight. The chalcedony pendant was originally a 14k gold brooch (circa 1880-1900) transformed by the removal of the pin findings and the addition of a 14k gold bail. The insect has red glass eyes, a sapphire abdomen, opal thorax, and rose cut diamonds on its wings.
The pendant measures 1.6 inches from top to bottom by 1.1 inches wide. It is in very good condition.
Materials: Opal, Gold.
