Brush cherry – Syzygium paniculatum
The Brush Cherry Tree or the magenta lilly pilly, also known as the Syzygium, is part of the Myrtle family and is found in South-East Asia, Australia and New Zealand. It produces petite white fluffy flowers during the spring and produces edible fruits in the form of bright red berries in the autumn. This bonsai tree also boasts dark green leaves which are of a pointy oval shape.
The Brush Cherry tree can be grown either indoors or outdoors. However, if you do grow yours outdoors, it is advisable (though not always necessary) to bring the bonsai tree indoors or into a greenhouse during the coldest months so as to avoid harsh frosts which can harm the tree. If temperatures fall below freezing, the tree should not be left outside for a prolonged period of time.
Brush Cherry bonsai trees enjoy warm, sunny areas, needing between four to six hours of sunlight daily.
The more sunlight and warmth your Bonsai receives, the more often it will need water.
More Bonsai die due to improper watering than any other cause. Check your Bonsai by
occasionally sticking your finger into the soil. Do not water the tree if the soil is damp or
cool. Brush Cherry bonsai do not tolerate salt. Use distilled/rain water if your water is
hard, or full of minerals. When the topsoil feels dry, water thoroughly and deeply. An old Bonsai watering trick is to place the entire pot in a sink of water an inch or two deep. Let the water absorb from the holes in the bottom of the pot.
Leaves want humidity to keep them green and healthy. Any time your tree is inside, the
air is very dry. Avoid putting your Bonsai near a draft or heating/air conditioning vent
which dries out the foliage.
Germination Tip:
After soaking the seed overnight and the seed has not softened or swelled, you will need to scarify the seed coat. Scarifying is the process of weakening the seed coat, so that water and oxygen can enter the seed, in turn, kick starting germination. Seeds will remain dormant if not exposed to these elements
Scarifying can be achieved by gently rubbing the seed coat with sandpaper, you do not need to rub off the entire coating, just enough for water to enter.
NB: Only scarify the seed coat, do not damage the internal parts of the seed.
Once Scarifying has been done. submerge the seed again as per instructions
